The Graphical Solution of a Correlation Table
To the engineer the graphical solution of a n y problem is interesting and welcome. It also seems that the solution of a correlation tablet‡ for Pearson’s product-moment coefficient is to him a thing to be avoided whenever possible; but the time is long past when statistical methods should have been accepted and earnestly put to u se by the engineer. The objects of this paper are three: First, to present a correlation table in a new light; second, to offer graphical methods which may be used for other but similar purposes; and, third, to provide a short method for obtaining means, standard deviation s, and possibly correlation coefficients for those to whom computing machines a r e not available, but who are experienced draftsmen.
