Mapping Long Term Mean Groundwater Level Using Existing Water Well Data
In this paper we present a valuable source of data for mapping long term mean groundwater level distributions. In particular, we propose integrating and making use of a massive amount of underutilized-used static-water-levels (SWLs) collected by water-well drillers and accumulated over past-decades. Although these measurements can be relatively crude they are "everywhere" and available at a high-resolution. Although prior investigations have concluded that SWL from water wells may be too noisy for most practical hydrogeologic applications, our systematic analyses show that, if statistically-processed, they can be very useful, enabling surprisingly accurate predictions of groundwater-level patterns. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this data source using a number of examples in Michigan.
