Impact of Sustainability Perceptions on the Purchasability of Materials in Construction Projects
The construction industry is a constantly-changing market, thereby making suppliers direct their efforts to understanding and meeting owners' requirements. Recently, a significant change in the construction industry has been the increased interest in sustainable materials. Material selection has been identified as an area where designers and contractors can have a significant impact on the environmental performance of a building. This paper illustrates how a tool to measure the user-based assessment of product sustainability can be used to evaluate the contribution of qualitative factors on material selection. The objective is to develop an instrument that validates user's perceptions of product sustainability and evaluate the effect of sustainable characteristics in the purchasability of construction materials. A survey of design and construction students and practitioners is carried out to capture the factors included in the instrument. A Factor Analysis approach is used to validate user's perceptions of sustainability and to demonstrate the effect on purchase intentions due to the factors considered.
