Concrete Bridges Form and Function: Sungai Prai Bridge, Malaysia
The structure has brought together world class standards of design, engineering and construction to produce a singular structure which was an alternative design procured by competitive Build-Operate-Transfer. Holistic design of all elements viaduct and main span resulted in no cost-premium for the single deck cable-stayed structure over more traditional twin parallel box girder bridges for the approaches and the river span. It was part of the Designer's Award of the Milne Medal by the British Group of IABSE in 2003, and the ICE International Medal in 2007. It also was a significant element in the second author's Award of the fib Diploma for Younger Engineers in 2007.
