Maury's theory on trade-winds which, up to the present day, has not been superseded by any other, though admitted to be highly unsatisfactoryand even contradictory, was formed at a time when the materials on hand of actual observations were very scanty. At the beginning of this year I formed another theory which to me seems to meet the case, and when I, not long ago, crossed the Atlantic in the teeth of the antitrade-winds, the subject naturally recurred to my mind, and so I shall here try to set forth the opinion I have arrived at, as it may cause other engineers to express their valuable opinions on the subject.
