Texas National and State Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks
The Texas Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers has an active Historic Civil Engineering Landmark recognition program. This paper describes that program and specifically focuses on several water-related landmarks recognized by the Section and national ASCE. Ten national Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks in Texas have been recognized by ASCE, while 17 additional landmarks have been recognized by the Section. The landmarks are comprised of bridges, roads, dams, seawalls, structures and even markers which are essential elements of civil engineering history in Texas. This paper presents three national ASCE and two Section landmarks with particular significance to the water resources industry: the Houston Ship Channel, Denison Dam, the San Antonio River Walk and Flood Control System, Medina Dam, and the Franklin Canal.
