EPBS Tunnel Construction in Soft Soil and Fractured Formation: A Case Study of LanZhou Subway Line 1
Earth pressure balanced shield (EPBS) technology is widely used in tunnel construction projects. LanZhou subway line 1, as the first underground rail transit project, is a typical EPBS construction project in soft clay with gravel. This tunnel crosses the city center from east to west, and its total length is about 34 km, including 24 subway stations. The line 1 project is constructed in soft soil (loess powder soil and silty clay) and fractured formation (sand gravel layer and conglomerate). One ZTE6410 earth pressure-balanced shield machine was used to construct this tunnel. However, tunneling in soft soil and fractured formation poses various challenges. including the risk of a massive rush of groundwater and ground deformation. This paper provides an overview of this project and summarizes the challenges faced and the techniques used to handle the difficulties encountered during construction.
