The topic of long-period waves is of importance in the design and construction of harbor facilities, since these waves affect floating objects within the confines of the harbor. This paper reports the results of field and model studies of the sources and characteristics of long-period waves in harbors and analyzes the subjects of basin resonance and water motions induced by the waves. The particular adaptability of models to this type of study is discussed, and examples of the use of models in the design of harbor facilities are given.
