Dredged Material Management at the Port of Long Beach
The Port of Long Beach's Pier T Marine Terminal project presented an opportunity for region-wide management of contaminated sediments from various sources. After a proposal to sequester project-generated sediments in a confined aquatic disposal (CAD) site was rejected by regulators, the Port designed a slip fill that had enough capacity to accept several hundred thousand cubic meters of contaminated material from two sites outside the harbor district. This willingness to serve as a regional disposal site facilitated permit acquisition and set the stage for long-term regional planning emphasizing beneficial re-use of contaminated sediments.
