Yielding of Saturated Clays at Elevated Temperatures
To capture the volumetric plastic strain behaviour of saturated clays under thermo-mechanical condition, the yielding behaviour at elevated temperatures must be thoroughly understood. In this study, the evidence that support the existence of two volumetric yield limits for saturated clays at elevated temperatures referred to as loading yield limit (LY) and thermal yield limit (TY) are introduced and discussed. An approach for determining both yield limits from simple experimental results is also presented. Moreover, two empirical equations are proposed to simulate the thermal evolution of LY and TY. The validity of the proposed equations has been verified against experimental results obtained on different clays as reported in the literature.
