A Miniature Tensiometer for Measurement of High Matric Suction
Theoretical and experimental studies have shown that the tensile strength of water is much greater than 100 kPa, the cavitation pressure of water. On this basis, a miniature tensiometer was developed in this study to measure high matric suctions in the residual soils of the sedimentary Jurong Formation of Singapore. Various factors that may affect the performance of the miniature tensiometer were evaluated. This paper presents the development of this miniature tensiometer and the evaluation results. The effects of pre-pressurization, assembly procedure, pressure reversal, equilibrium time, suction sustaining time, and restoration after suction exceed the air entry value of the ceramic disk were examined.
