Performance of Biosurfactant Produced from Used Vegetable Oil
Disposing of used vegetable oil into the sewer system is causing numerous problems for the cities. Hence there is interest in recycling the used vegetable oil for other applications. In this study, a nonaseptic method was used to produce biosurfactants from used vegetable oil. The biosurfactant produced was characterized by various physical and biochemical assays. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the produced biosurfactant was 0.7 g/L and the surface tension was 30 dynes/cm. Also the active groups in the biosurfactant were identified using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). The ability of the biosurfactant to solubilize dense non aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) was studied using chlorinated organic compounds such as trichloroethylene (TCE). The efficiency of the biosurfactant produced from used vegetable oil was compared to other commercially available surfactants and the results were comparable.
