Estimation of Subgrade Modulus Using Falling Weight Deflectometer
A field-testing program was conducted to estimate the modulus of subgrade from the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) tests at three asphalt pavement sections in South Carolina. Three backcalculation software packages were used to interpret FWD deflections: BAKFAA, SCDOT Program, and AASHTOWare. To verify these tools for South Carolina conditions, the back-calculated layer modulus is compared to results from Finite Element Models (FEM) that were developed for the pavement sections using ABAQUS. This study aimed to validate the back-calculated subgrade modulus from FWD testing through numerical analysis. The predicted surface deflections at different radial distances were compared with the field FWD deflection values. The results show that FEM predicted surface deflection profiles are closely aligned with the field measured values.
