Indus Valley - West Pakistan’s Life Line
After the partition of India, West Pakistan was left with a large irrigable area but with diminishing water supplies. India will divert largo amounts of water from the Indus Basin to the Indian Desert. The necessary geological and meteorological background is presented. The past, present and future conditions, in so far as they influence the future agricultural activity of West Pakistan, are described. The influence of the Indus Waters Treaty-1960 is outlined. The most advantageous use of high-grade surface water left to West Pakistan is stressed. The limited use of low-grade ground water is examined. The necessity of preserving the lower part of the Indus Basin by separating the fresh waters from the salt-contaminated drainage waters is outlined. Provision of a special drainage water system discharging directly into the Arabian Sea is proposed.
