A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The State of Practice of Unitized Curtain Walls
Unitized curtain walls have become increasingly popular because of characteristically short lead times, high quality, and efficient installation as compared to traditional building envelope enclosures. Of course, these advantages are predicated on the proper integration with the base building structure. The Structural Engineer of Record (SER) and the façade Specialty Structural Engineer (SSE) often have limited opportunities to collaborate. This paper is written from the perspective of a custom curtain wall façade contractor intending to further the understanding within the structural engineering community of the design and performance of unitized curtain wall. Understanding the behavior of the façade system will aid the structural design community to develop structures that economically incorporate curtain wall attachment details and take advantage of and accommodate nuances of unitized curtain wall in the design, analysis, and detailing of the structure.
