Heat Transfer Capacity of Heat Exchanger Piles in Soft Clay
The heat exchanger pile (HEP) is a new type of pile system that combines conventional piles with ground source heat pumps. It has its own characteristics, advantages, and application status, as presented in this paper with its design model and layout pattern explored in detail and its heat transfer capacity calculation discussed with a focus on soft clay ground in coastal regions. The calculations shown in this paper were applied to a six-story residential building in Shanghai. In general, HEP is significantly more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly than a traditional foundation pile.
