A Century of Topographic Surveying and Mapping
The tremendous progress that has been made in providing adequate mapping coverage of the United States is a tribute to the men and organizations that prevailed against many obstacles. The earliest exploratory expeditions were more in the nature of reconnaissance trips than scientific mapping parties. This paper traces the development of the science of mapping, especially in the western section of the United States. The work of federal agencies is described, and the present status of mapping is examined.
