Characterization of Airfield Subbase Materials Using Precision Unbound Material Analyzer (PUMA)
Unbound aggregate layer (FAA specification P154) is an essential component of airfield pavement. For airport pavement design, P154 modulus is estimated as a function of subgrade CBR and subbase thickness. In this study the Precision Unbound Material Analyzer (PUMA) was used to characterize the resilient behavior of P-154 subbase material used at FAA’s National Airport Pavement Test Facility (NAPTF). A series of PUMA tests were conducted on two types of P154 subbase materials. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of loading frequency on subbase resilient modulus. The correlation between vertical stress and horizontal stress was investigated. Triaxial tests were also conducted on these subbase materials. Resilient Modulus values measured from PUMA and triaxial tests are presented.
