Taking Advantage of Strengths and Weaknesses when Rehabilitating Waterfront Structures
The paper presents three brief case histories in which both hidden structural weaknesses and strengths were discovered and utilized to decrease the costs of rehabilitating different types of waterfront structures. Recent industry developments in underwater investigations, ground improvement technology and other design and construction practices are also discussed. In each case, common problems associated with waterfront structures such as corrosion, structural failure and outdated design criteria are addressed. Rehabilitation concepts involving replacement lateral support systems and ground improvement technology are discussed as examples of current methods of dealing with these common problems.
