The Lake Front Improvements of the Illinois Central Railroad in Chicago
The original Illinois Central Railroad was chartered in 1850, to build a line from Cairo, at the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, to Dubuque, Ia., with a branch line from the present city of Centralia, Ill., to Chicago. This line was constructed in 1852, entering Chicago along the shore of Lake Michigan and having its terminal station located between Randolph Street and the Chicago River. The southern limit of the city at that time was Twenty-second: Street.
