Effect of Density Variation of Coarse Aggregate on Asphalt Mixture Properties
There are very few research achievements about the effect of aggregate density variation on the properties of asphalt mixture. In this paper, it was studied by testing in the laboratory at the same gradation and the same asphalt aggregate ratio. The results showed that, as aggregate gradation, water absorption, asphalt aggregate ratio remain unchanged, the coarse aggregate density increases, percentage of voids decrease accordingly. When the density increases by 0.2 g/cm3, percentage of voids reduces by 1%, and the voids in mineral aggregate of the mixture changes little, and the mixture's capacity to prevent deformation at the high temperature decreases accordingly, but the density variation changes very little about the water stability and anti-cracking at low temperature. Considering the percentage of voids changing range of the asphalt mixture, it is suggested that during the production process, the density of the same batch of the coarse aggregate can only float within the range of ±0.1kg/cm3. The result of this research can be taken as a useful reference as modifying and revising the related technical specifications of the asphalt pavement.
