Comparative Study on Suitability of EPB Machine in Typical Sandy Cobble Ground in China
There was a common phenomenon appeared as severe wear of the cutter heads and cutting tools, frequent changing of the cutting tools, difficulty of muck discharge, poor adaptability of shield, and improper handling of construction problems during metro shield construction in sandy cobble stratum. In order to improve the adaptability of shield in this kind of formation, choosing the optimum type of shield, equipment configuration, and construction countermeasures are the prerequisite to guarantee the smooth completion of construction. This article took Beijing, Chengdu, and Shenyang as study objects—three typical cities where exist widespread sandy cobble stratums. Based on the comparative analysis on the key physical and mechanical parameters (content and strength of cobble, grain composition, and so on) and hydrogeological condition in sandy cobble stratums, practical engineering problems, corresponding measures, and construction effects were systematically summarized and analyzed in the process of shield construction, and then, the shield type and its configurations, as well as the heading parameters aiming at different types of sand cobble stratums were put forward. Conclusions drawn from the paper can provide practically targeted references for engineers in sandy cobble stratum.
