Hardware Architecture for Wireless Sensor Network Measurement of Vibrations
Wireless sensor networks are becoming a more common testing and measurement method within all engineering fields. This paper discusses a cost-effective hardware architecture developed and implemented by the authors for making low frequency wireless vibration measurements. The primary hardware components that are discussed include the following: 1 Circuitry required to provide power and signal conditioning for 3rd party sensors connected to commercial wireless sensor boards, and 2 Implementation of anti-aliasing filters at the remote node level. Several accelerometers, Crossbow sensor boards and anti-aliasing implementation methods are discussed. An example of low frequency vibration measurements using a wireless sensor network is presented and compared with wired measurements. The wireless hardware architecture presented shows excellent agreement with wired measurements, while also allowing anti-aliasing and signal conditioning at each remote wireless node.
