Railway development proper began in England. In 1801—in the very beginning of the 19th century, the century which was to witness the most wonderful material achievements of the human race—the first chartered line of rails was laid for a short horse-car line from Wandsworth to Croydon, in the suburbs of London. Lines of similar character were constructed almost every year thereafter.
