Routing Graded Sediments in Streams: Applications
A one-dimensional numerical model has been tested in simulating the movement of well graded sediments through a stream reach. The model is applied to two laboratory flumes and two alluvial channel reaches, found in the literature. Three of these examples are under steady state flow conditions and the other is under unsteady flow conditions. In the unsteady flow situation, the flow computations are done by using a water routing scheme based on the kinematic wave equations. This scheme needs adjustment of one parameter. The sediment model also needs adjustment of only one parameter which is the erodibility parameter. The model predicts water and sediment discharges coming out of each reach, size distributions of these transported materials, size distributions of the bed material or the armor coat, and changes in bed elevations. Comparisons of these predictions are made with the measurements available from these examples, and are found to be promising.
