Special Design Features of the Yorktown Bridge
Many unique problems were encountered in the design of the George P. Coleman. Memorial Bridge at Yorktown, Va. The ultimate solutions to these problems and a brief description of the construction of the central span are included in this paper. The design features of this structure include the use of two swing spans in tandem, hollow, concrete supporting piers, and steel caissons specially designed for the construction of the piers. Details of the substructure and superstructure are given, as well as information on the operating features of the bridge.
