A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This paper is to analyze the architectural characteristics of native materials from three perspectives: ecology, technology, and aesthetics. The building techniques of using native materials are discussed in accordance with regional climate characteristics, geological and geomorphologic conditions of construction plants, traditional building crafts, regional structure system, and construction modes, and the final aim is to reduce the constructive destruction of eco-village and promote the sustainable development of eco-villages, as well as to improve people’s livelihoods. The Xiangyang Village of the Lianshan County, Guangdong Province, discussed below is a real project in which the author has participated and carried out a series of design practices based on the planning references such as project concepts and functional layouts. Although the native materials are not competent for large-scale modern architecture, it can still play a role in the building of an eco-village and achieve unexpected accomplishments.
