Innovation in Pipe Material for Microtunneling Applications
Microtunneling is one of the trenchless methods used for installing underground pipelines. The use of this method has been growing since its introduction in North America in 1984, due to its ability to install pipes with high accuracy in congested underground urban corridors and under transportation arteries with minimum amount of surface disruption. Although competitively priced, and despite its inherent advantage of high strength and ductility, steel is generally not the material of choice in microtunneling applications. This is primarily due to the fact that steel pipes have higher installation costs due to down time associated with field welding sections of pipe, and secondly due to concerns regarding corrosion of steel material. This paper describes the results from finite element analysis and field application of a new mechanical jointing system that eliminates the need for field welding in microtunneling application. This method has been used successfully on numerous microtunneling projects since 1994.
