Asphalt Binder Properties and Airfield Pavement Cracking
In recent years, the use of additional binder parameters such as ΔTc and the Glover-Rowe parameter have been used to assess the propensity for a binder to show early life durability, non-load associated and thermal cracking. This paper will provide a background on how these parameters were developed based on studies conducted on materials from Newark Airport and others. The inter-relationship that these parameters have with other binder tests and mixture tests will be given. In particular, the parameters used for assessment of mixture master curves can be shown to be related to the binder parameters (R-value, cross-over frequency and temperature susceptibility) as determined by the Christensen Anderson model will be explained using various samples of both binder and mix. The importance for pavement design of binder selection and concepts regarding application of rejuvenating oils to restore properties have also been evaluated using this approach and will be presented in the paper.
