During World War II the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers employed German prisoners of war at a camp in Clinton, Mississippi, to begin building the largest hydraulic model ever constructed. The completed model yielded valuable data that guided flood control efforts in the Mississippi River basin for more than two decades.
