One-Side Dikes
This paper examines the flood mitigation measures centered around the construction of one-side dikes on primitive rivers. The implementation of such measures in the early stages of land development is considered vital to avoid the high costs and time required to execute effective flood mitigation works after the river areas are reclaimed. The type of dike structures examined includes continuous dikes, ring dikes and intermittent dikes. We examined two projects; the Apure River and the Chama River projects, on which the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources in Venezuela and the Japan International Cooperation Agency performed the flood mitigation planning in 1993 and in 1990, respectively.
