Soil Particle Size Characterization by Stereophotography
This paper presents a particle size characterization method based on stereophotography. This method can accurately and simultaneously determine the thicknesses of many particles ranging from sand to gravel using two parallel images. The complete surface contours of the particle can also be obtained, so characterization of particle surfaces also becomes feasible. A comparison between physically measured and optically calculated particle thicknesses shows that the discrepancies of this method are extremely small relative to the size of a particle. After obtaining the thickness of every particle from the parallel images and the length and width from traditional 2D single images, an ellipsoidal particle model is used to approximate the three particle dimensions. The equivalent sieve opening size is then determined by mathematically fitting the ellipsoidal particle to a square sieve opening. The results demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of stereophotography and the importance of particle thickness on its size characterization.
