Side Weir in Rectangular Channel
The discharge characteristics of a side weir at the head of a branch channel taking off at right angles to the main channel have been investigated. Both sharp-crested and broad-crested weirs are studied for the case of subcritical flow in the main channel. A procedure of design based on De Marchi's theory has been evolved. The De Marchi coefficient is empirically related to the Froude number at the upstream end of the weir and the ratio of the upstream depth (above the weir crest) to the length of the weir.
