Long-Term Time-Dependent Behavior of Surcharged Preloaded Embankment
An investigation into the time-dependent deformational behavior of the unreinforced section of the Coombabah Creek trial embankment constructed near the Gold Coast highway, Queensland, Australia, on sensitive soft clay is discussed in this paper. This embankment was instrumented to monitor the settlement near the centerline, and excess pore pressure developed in the foundation soil with time. To predict this settlement and the development of excess pore water pressure with time near the embankment's center line, two separate fully coupled unit cell analyses were carried out, one using a creep-based elastic viscoplastic (EVP) and the other using the modified Cam clay (MCC) model to represent the foundation soil. It was found that the analysis with the MCC model underpredicted settlement while that with the creep-based EVP model captured it well but overpredicted the excess pore pressure response. In this paper, pertinent details of the analyses and their results are compared with field-performance monitoring data.
