Distinctive Features and Advantages of American Locomotive Practice
The locomotives of the United States are not so different from those of foreign countries as might be supposed from the outward appearance; most of the differences are in details, and result from differences in operation, which demand in the United States a large increase in the general dimensions. In studying distinctive features of locomotives of all countries, it is necessary to know in minute detail the conditions of operation under which each class of locomotives is worked, as it is generally found that engines everywhere are well adapted for the work they do. The main difference between locomotives used here and in other countries is a necessary result of the difference in environment.
