High-Capacity Micropiles in Edmonton Shale
Micropiles have been used in North America since the beginning of 1970s, but it was only after 1990s where technical specifications and design guidelines were established. Micropiles are used in different geological conditions and for different purposes such as foundation support, reinforcement, or slope stabilization. This paper presents a case history of high-capacity micropile design and installation for the Tawatinâ Bridge foundations in Edmonton shale in the Saskatchewan River. A load test program was carried out to confirm the performance of these micropiles where the micropiles are tested to their ultimate geotechnical capacity of up to 5 MN. The design approach, the installation methods, instrumentation, technical challenges, and the results of load tests are provided herein.
