Impedance Logs for Drilled Shafts at the Northwestern NGES
The impulse response method is a nondestructive evaluation technique used to check the length and continuity of deep foundations. Uncertainty may exist when interpreting the results to quantify the size and location of the anomaly, if present. The analysis can be enhanced by developing a two-dimensional graphical image of the shaft using the impedance log technique. This paper describes the method used to develop impedance logs and shows results from drilled shafts at the Northwestern University National Geotechnical Experimentation Site. Two of the shafts were purposely constructed with anomalies representative of typical construction deficiencies. The ability to quantify the size and location of these anomalies using the impedance log technique is discussed.
