Sequoia Aqueduct RCCP Hot Tap
East Bay Municipal Utility District’s Sequoia Aqueduct is a 20-mile long 48-inch inside diameter reinforced concrete cylinder pipe (RCCP) constructed in 1929. The RCCP was manufactured by the Lock Joint Pipe Company. Connected to the aqueduct was a 24-inch diameter 1929 steel pipeline with an extensive leak history. In order to replace this pipeline while maintaining service, a 24-inch hot tap on the aqueduct was designed. AWWA Manual M9 for Concrete Pressure Pipe only recommends a strap-on prefabricated tapping saddle for tapping RCCP. This system requires a rubber gasket and grout to keep the joint watertight. Manual M9 explicitly does not recommend weld-on tapping assemblies citing concerns with damaging the steel cylinder during welding. However, a welded connection was designed and installed in order to achieve a zero leakage permanent connection. This paper describes the design details and construction requirements utilized to mitigate M9 concerns and make an improved flanged outlet.
