Jet-Grouting in Cohesive Soils for Ground Improvement in Hawaii
A new highway widening project specified jet-grouted columns for supporting the new embankment fill and stabilizing an under-consolidated soft cohesive soil layer. Jet-grouted columns were installed and extended down to depths ranging from about 30 to 70 feet below the existing ground surface. An extensive QA/QC program was implemented to evaluate the effectiveness of the ground improvement, including performing a test section, monitoring the jet-grouting operations, coring and sampling the jet-grouted columns, performing standard penetration tests (SPT) and cone penetration tests (CPT) of the jet-grouted improved areas, monitoring the pore water pressures in the soft soils between the jet-grouted columns, and measuring the ground settlement due to the embankment fill placement. Some of the lessons learned from this project are presented and shared in this paper.
