Classification and Identification of Soils
The purpose of this paper is threefold: (1) To review and compare existing soil classifications used in civil engineering, with emphasis on their limitations; (2) to present a new soil grouping tentatively adopted by the United States Engineer Department in 1942 for use on airfield projects; and (3) to outline field identification procedures, requiring no apparatus. In abbreviated form, this pa per was presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society in New York, N. Y., in January, 1943.
