Rapid Recovery
In May 2017, the California Department of Transportation had to contend with a massive landslide that closed a section of the iconic State Route 1 through central California’s scenic coastal region of Big Sur. As it designed and constructed a replacement for the damaged roadway, the project team had to consider active rockfall, rapid erosion of the toe, and steep terrain as well as how best to protect future travelers.
