Shear Behavior of Waste Rock and Filtered Tailings Mixtures
The focus of this study was to evaluate the undrained shear behavior of filtered mine tailings and a tailings-dominated mixture of filtered tailings and waste rock (i.e., GeoWaste). Consolidated undrained triaxial compression tests were conducted on filtered tailings and GeoWaste. Filtered tailings yielded contractive, strain-hardening behavior. GeoWaste also exhibited strain-hardening, contractive behavior, and a modest transition from contractive to dilative behavior at an effective confining stress of 500 kPa. The undrained shear behavior of GeoWaste was comparable to filtered tailings at effective confining stresses of 50 kPa and 100 kPa. The undrained shear behavior of GeoWaste at an effective confining stress of 500 kPa exhibited enhanced shear resistance compared to filtered tailings, which was attributed to interaction between waste rock particles.
