Weak Axis Lateral Load Testing of a Four H Pile Bent
A sacrificial pile bent was laterally load tested in the weak direction to structural failure at the Auburn University National Geotechnical Experimentation Site. This test was conducted as part of a larger effort to determine the load path due to weak axis loading of a pile bent. The test bent consisted of 4 HP 12 × 53 piles installed at 8 ft center to center spacing with the outer two piles battered at 1.5:12. The free length was, on average 9 ft. The bent was topped with a 3 × 3 ft reinforced concrete cap. The bents were loaded to failure by pulling them against an existing 3 × 3 pipe pile group. The H piles were instrumented with strain gages along the free length and an inclinometer tube. This paper documents the load test setup and program and presents results of the test.
