Stability of a Gravel Soil Slope under Reservoir Water Level Fluctuations
This paper introduces a series of analyses of transient groundwater flows in a soil slope under reservoir water level fluctuations and analyses of the stability of the slope. In the seepage analyses, groundwater regimes during reservoir filling and reservoir water level drawdown are studied. The soil-water characteristic curve of the slope soil is estimated from the grain-size distribution of a typical landslide soil and the permeability function is estimated based on in-situ permeability test results and the estimated soil-water characteristic curve. The boundary condition of the slope surface in the water level fluctuation zone is set as a known hydraulic-head function of time. Delayed groundwater response in the slope is found when the reservoir water level fluctuates. The stability of the slope during reservoir water level rising and water level drawdown is also analyzed incorporating the pore water pressures calculated from the transient seepage analyses. These analyses provide some basis for stabilization of similar slopes subject to reservoir water fluctuations.
