Geogrid Reinforced Embankment Constructed over Peat Soils in Clark County, Washington: Design and Field Performance
A throughway, Padden Parkway West Extension, crossing through a previously undeveloped area of fields and marshes was built in Clark County, Washington, in 2001 – 2003. Geotechnical explorations revealed that highly compressible peat and organic silt soils as deep as 4.3 m (14 ft) were present along significant portions of the alignment. The embankment, underlain by compressible soils, was built on a prism of soil reinforced with Tensar structural geogrids eliminating the disadvantages of the traditional approach of excavation and replacement. This paper is a review of an innovative geosynthetic application that facilitated safe, cost-effective and environmentally friendly construction of the roadway embankment over compressible site soils.
