Optimum Use of Pretensioning, Post-Tensioning, and Two-Way Prestressing
The historical nature of the development of new materials in engineered construction has always marked the beginning of new concepts in design, renewed trends, and improved techniques in forming different structural types. Prestressing is the creation within a material of a state of stress and strain that will enable it to better perform its intended function. Of all the building materials resisting tension, compression, bending, shear, and torsion, none penetrates so deeply into an engineer.s mind as prestressed concrete. Its methods and applications are so versatile and unique that it embodies not only new techniques but also new concepts as well. Pretensioning, post-tensioning, combination of prestressed with reinforced concrete, are becoming well known to the profession. Since the late 1920.s, there has been a growing realization for the need of prestressed concrete in combination with precasting for reasons of economics inextricably interwoven with techniques, esthetics, ease, and speed in construction.
