Testing Passive Fire-Resistance Systems for Fire Following Earthquakes
An extensive test program was conducted to investigate the mechanical performance of a wide range of passive fire-resistance systems during simulated earthquakes and their performance in subsequent fire tests. Since no general guideline for such tests is currently available, a test setup and measurement metrics were developed. The results show that different passive fire-resistance systems have different capacity to tolerate deformation while maintaining their smoke and fire rating. Consideration of earthquake-induced deformation in the assessment of passive fire-resistance systems will contribute to more robust post-earthquake fire performance of critical infrastructure.
