Treatment of Uncertainty in Liquefaction Analysis
Deterministic liquefaction analysis ignores uncertainty regarding size and nature of future earthquakes, stochastic response of the soil column, and the variability in soil resistance to liquefaction. This paper provides a framework to evaluate the annual probability of liquefaction considering both aleatoric and epistemic uncertainty. The methodology is based on the approach of the recent FEMA design codes. Results of probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA), site response analysis and conventional liquefaction analysis are folded together to define annual probability of liquefaction. Assessment of the effects of uncertainty is illustrated through an example application to an industrial site.
