Analysis of Waffle Slabs with and without Openings
Current design procedures do not provide recommendations specific for waffle slabs. Designers smear the contribution of the ribs and use the design guidelines for flat slabs to design ribbed slabs. In addition, the effect of openings on the response of waffle slabs is not fully explored. Therefore, in this paper numerical simulations using ANSYS are used to study the response of waffle slabs with and without openings. The numerical model is verified using available experimental results. This paper will: (1) obtain the design coefficients for column and field strips of internal panel of a waffle slab and compare these coefficients with those suggested by ACI code, and (2) study the effect of openings on the design coefficients. Ninety-six Linear and non-linear analysis models using ANSYS were performed in the study. The parameters evaluated are the column size, the solid portion size around the column, the opening size and opening location. Simple multipliers were obtained to modify the moment coefficients recommended by ACI code.
