Biodegradation of Phenol-Pb Contaminated Clay Soil
Various methods are being investigated to treat soils contaminated with organic and metal wastes. Hence the effect of metal wastes on the biodegradation of organic waste must be investigated. Since higher levels of phenol contaminated soils are encountered with metals in industrial and hazardous waste sites, in this study, acclimate sludge was used to treat up to 10,000 mg/kg of phenol contaminated soils. Synthetically contaminated soil consisting of 80% sand and 20% clay was used in this study. The effect of lead on the biodegradation of phenol was found to be significant at concentration higher than 30 mg/L lead in the aqueous phase. The growth of biomass was not affected up to a lead concentration of 30 mg/L but was reduced by about 99% when the lead concentration was 120 mg/L.
